Sometimes the Pivot Is Just Figuring Out What You Don’t Want

One thing I’m learning during this season of my life is that a pivot doesn’t always come with a big announcement.

Sometimes it looks like applying for jobs.

Getting rejected.

Changing your resume.

Questioning whether you’re looking in the wrong industry.

Finding something that makes perfect sense, only to realize it isn’t really what you want.

And then starting again.

That has been a big part of my journey lately.

I know I want more for myself and my family. I know I want a career that gives me financial stability, flexibility, and room to actually enjoy my life. I also know that I don’t want to climb a corporate ladder just because that’s what I’m supposed to do.

For a while, I thought earning more degrees and gaining more experience would automatically make the next step obvious.

It hasn’t.

If anything, having more options has forced me to ask harder questions.

What kind of work do I actually enjoy?

What am I good at?

How much responsibility do I really want?

What kind of life am I trying to build outside of work?

Does this opportunity move me closer to freedom, or does it just give me another title?

I’m realizing that I enjoy hospitality more than I gave myself credit for. I love operations. I like solving problems, organizing chaos, helping people, and making sure things run the way they’re supposed to.

At the same time, I still want the flexibility of remote work and the possibility of living overseas.

Those two paths don’t fit together perfectly yet.

And that’s okay.

I don’t have to have the entire plan figured out today.

My MBA is about finishing it, continuing to explore opportunities. I’m paying attention to what excites me instead of applying to everything simply because I’m qualified for it.

Most importantly, I’m giving myself permission to change my mind.

Because changing direction isn’t the same thing as failing.

Sometimes you have to walk down a few roads before you realize which one actually feels like you.

So this week, I’m not announcing some huge breakthrough.

I’m simply acknowledging that I’m getting clearer.

I know more about what I don’t want.

I’m learning more about what I do want.

And I’m trusting that those two things will eventually meet somewhere in the middle.

That’s the pivot.

The Jasmine Pivot is my mid-week journal through career change, education, entrepreneurship, family, moving, and building a life with more freedom. No perfect blueprint. Just figuring it out as I go.
